Sterling Square, on the corner of Silver Street and Crown Street in Katesgrove, has been steadily going up over the past three years. We have observed the progress on the beautifully tidy Thomas Homes site.
Thomas Homes are already advertising flats for sale at prices from £255,000, but last week the site was quiet, and work had stopped for the time-being.
The development is in two blocks. Thomas Homes began building the first block of 80 flats, on the corner of SIlver Street and Crown Street, in 2018. They later acquired the adjoining plot on Newark Street, and Reading Borough Council (RBC) gave planning permission for an additional block of nine flats.
In 2015, RBC granted outline planning permission to Montpelier Estates Ltd for a residential institution comprising 96 assisted living units, but this did not proceed and the site was acquired for development by Thomas Homes in 2017.
For a brief, but fondly remembered, period at the end of the 2000s, part of the site had been a community garden. This was lost when the empty properties on the corner were demolished.
