Leader of Reading Borough Council (RBC) Councillor Jason Brock confirmed at the RBC policy committee meeting on 26 September that the former Central Club on London Street had been sold subject to planning permission.
He went on to say that either party could choose to terminate the contract with a possible ‘longstop date’ of 22 April 2021 if planning permission was not granted by 2 November 2020, His statement was in response to a question from Councillor Rob White.
Councillor White said that the Green Party had supported the Aspire community bid for the club “rather than to a developer for yet more flats”. He went on to link this case with “the collapse of the ill-thought out sale of Arthur Hill swimming pool to a developer for flats” [at 39:08].
In a supplementary question, Councillor White asked when a planning application was expected. Councillor Brock answered that he did not know and that it was up to the successful bidder to make the application.
