So much excitement up here on Katesgrove Hill as the sound of the approaching motorcycle mounted race marshall announced that the race was on its way to the small crowd at the junction of Kendrick and Christchurch Roads .
The first competitor to appear was the wheelchair racer Chris Nash.
The first runners appeared almost 15 minutes later, with Paul Pollock, who came fourth in the race, in the lead. Behind him was a group which included Scott Overall the overall winner of the 2019 Sage Reading half marathon with a time of 1:03:50.
The numbers of runners flowing down Kendrick Road grew ever greater after the leading groups had passed.
After a left turn into London Road, the race turned right onto London Street and left onto Mill Lane enticed by the sounds from Beatroots booming under the Inner Distribution Road at approximately the half way point.
The race then left Katesgrove and was lost in the wilderness of the Oracle and town centre before escaping along the Oxford Road and up onto Tilehurst Road for the return loop to the finish at the Madejski Stadium.
As 1pm approached, traffic at the Whitley Pump roundabout was beginning to return to normal although the buses were not yet running.
