The Reading Hindu Temple on Whitley Street held their annual Diwali cultural programme on Sunday 11 November. Katesgrove artist Huma Jehan went along to draw what happened at this lively and colourful event.

Diwali (or Deepavali) is the Hindu celebration of the homecoming of Lord Rama after his defeat of demon Ravanda; it is the victory of light over darkness.

There was music, singing and playing the harmonium.

The Reading Hindu Temple on Whitley Street was first opened in 1906 as the Whitley Hall Methodist church, a Wesleyan mission. It was bought by Reading’s Hindu community in 1997 and refurbished over the following decade and a half.
