The new Whitley Library, in the South Reading Community Hub on Northumberland Avenue, opened its doors to the public on Tuesday 19 June, after a six month Reading Borough Council (RBC) project to improve the building.

The newly refurbished South Reading Community Hub includes a children’s centre, the Sure Start Whitley day nursery and community meeting spaces. The Whitley Social Club and Café, which was refurbished by the Whitley Community Development Association in 2015, is in the same building.

“This is a fantastic new facility for people in the Whitley area,” said RBC lead councillor for neighbourhoods and communities Sophia James. “With the library, children’s centre and community facilities brought together in one place it gives people easy access to a wide range of services. The community hub will also continue to provide a valuable meeting space for local groups and organisations.”

The old Whitley Library, on the junction of Northumberland Avenue and Cressingham Road, was closed on 2 June. The opening hours of the new library are the same as for the old one.

The South Reading Community Hub, at 252 Northumberland Avenue RG2 7QA, will be ceremonially opened by the mayor, Councillor Deborah Edwards, on Tuesday 26 June at 11am. Staff and volunteers will conduct guided tours at 11am, 2pm and 6pm to show the public what is on offer.
