The Central Goods Yard north of the Berkeley Road bridge, features in Reading Museum’s latest exhibition On Track.
One exhibit is a photograph taken about 1910 in the depot where, in the distance, you can see the maltings of Simonds Brewery. The yard has now been replaced by the Inner Distribution Road (IDR), pictured above. The map (below) is from the about the same date.
Another exhibit is the GWR monogram from the Fobney Street entrance gate to the yard. There is also a mention of the Coley Branch Line.
Of course, there are many other exhibits on show to tempt railway enthusiasts in the Sir John Madejski Art Gallery. The exhibition covers the history of the railway and its stations in Reading from the beginning to the present day.
The Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm. ‘On Track’ continues until 14 January 2017.
